When Sharib Hashmi Took The Biggest Risk Of His Life

Sharib Hashmi and Nasreen got married in 2003. In 2009, Sharib made a decision that changed their lives forever. He quit his secure job as an in-house writer with MTV to try his luck in films. At the time, he had a wife, a child, and responsibilities that could not be ignored. In an interview with Dainik Bhaskar, Sharib revealed that the turning point came when he was rejected for a role in Dhobi Ghat even after finalisation.

He wanted to give acting a real shot. He started auditioning. But as months passed, his savings began to dry up. He borrowed money from friends. No one came forward to help. What followed was a period of emotional and financial darkness.

“My wife supported me a lot during that period full of struggle. She sold her jewellery so we could provide for food in the house. We even sold our house to make our ends meet. I had begun to lose hope with time. There was a time when I was not sure what would I feed my family for the next meal. She sold all her jewellery so I could pursue my acting ambitions without worrying about the food on the table. Eventually, we even had to sell our house. But I didn’t give up.”

Those words say everything about the kind of partnership they share.

Sharib Hashmi’s struggle phase lasted nearly three years. Eventually, reality forced him to take up a job again. He began working with Sony TV, writing scripts for anchors and shows. He also acted in a short film titled Mehrooni. That small project changed his destiny.

Casting director Shanoo Sharma noticed his work and selected him for Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, and Katrina Kaif. The film was released in 2012 and marked Sharib Hashmi’s official debut in mainstream cinema. His long-buried acting dream finally found its way back to life, largely because his wife never let him give up.

Just when Sharib’s career began to stabilise, life threw another challenge at them. Nasreen was diagnosed with oral cancer. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Sharib spoke about how the diagnosis shook them but never broke her spirit.

He shared that Nasreen has undergone four surgeries since 2018. Each time, she recovered within three to four days. Her strength amazed everyone around her. Sharib revealed that Nasreen’s will to live came from her love for her children and her husband. She didn’t complain. She didn’t slow down life. Instead, she fought, healed, and stood tall while Sharib continued working and building his career.

Sharib has often spoken about how Nasreen put his dreams ahead of her own. In an interview, he revealed that she left her job after their son was born so that Sharib could focus on auditions and acting.

“It was my wife Nasreen who supported me and stood by my side. She told me, ‘If this is what you want to do in life, then I am with you.’ She had left her job after our son was born. But when we exhausted all our savings, it was she who took up a job again to support the family. She was dabbling with her job and family together. Hats off to her.”

That kind of support is rare. That kind of belief changes lives.
