The meal delivery scene in India has just gotten hotter! Our hunger emotions have been dominated for years by Swiggy and Zomato, but a new name is now available. The bike-taxi app Rapido, which made navigating traffic a snap, has introduced “Ownly”, a food delivery service of its own. The only downside is that it promises to charge no commission, which has the potential to completely upend the market.

Ownly Is 15% Cheaper Than Other Food Delivery Apps With Zero Commission

Offering reasonably priced meals, Rapido has introduced its new food delivery service “Ownly” in India. At the moment, the app is only accessible through the Google Play Store and works in a few Bengaluru locations.

Ownly will operate on a zero-commission model for restaurants with the goal of providing meals at prices that are on par with those offered by physical outlets. At least four meals are priced at Rs. 150 or less on the site, while basic items like rice and eggs are available for less than Rs. 100. Rapido intends to maintain pricing around 15% cheaper than those of other well-known platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato.

Rapido Expands Into Food Delivery Market

Rapido, which is a ride-hailing platform, has entered the food delivery market with the release of Ownly, a stand-alone mobile application. The app is now available in a few locations, such as HSR Layout and BTM Layout. The recently released app will face competition from apps like Magicpin, Zomato, and Swiggy.

The National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI) — which represents over 50,000 restaurants — and Rapido began discussing terms and conditions (T&C) for getting restaurant partners on the platform a few months prior to the first appearance. NRAI has stated that the association is actively looking into a third option because Swiggy and Zomato demand exorbitant charges.

Customers must pay Rs 20 as a base delivery fee, and if the order is for Rs 100 or less, the delivery price will be Rs 10. When the order value is between Rs 100 and Rs 400, there will be a flat GST payment in addition to the delivery price of Rs 25. According to Business Standard, there will also be a delivery fee of Rs 50 for orders over Rs 400.

With over 4.5 million deliveries each day and 95% of orders, Zomato and Swiggy continue to rule India’s $8 billion food delivery market. However, companies have criticized the two food delivery giants for their high commissions and special treatment.

Ownly and Rapido’s entry into the food delivery market represents a daring attempt to upend India’s established duopoly. It is presenting itself as a more equitable option to the industry giants by providing meals at reduced costs and guaranteeing restaurants a zero-commission model.
