The Metropolitan Region of Mumbai is set to experience a breakthrough in aviation infrastructure. On October 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make the long-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport a reality. It is not just another airport opening, but a new era of connectivity and economic development in Mumbai.

The DGCA aviation safety regulator issued the aerodrome license to the airport on September 30, which was the last obstacle to its opening. This license is also important because it will ensure that the airport is safe and fit to receive commercial flights.

Although the inauguration will be held on October 8 at 2:40 PM, it will take passengers a little longer to be able to fly out of this new airport. The airport will be fully operational by December, according to CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal, who revealed this during a briefing held on Saturday.

This is not unusual in terms of the time between the inauguration and the commencement of operations. It enables time to conduct final test operations, train the staff, and ensure that everything is fine before the passengers board the plane.

Who Owns Navi Mumbai International Airport?

Navi Mumbai International Airport, a joint venture, is undertaking the development of the airport in several phases. The ownership structure is rather interesting and demonstrates a public-private partnership model.

Adani Group has the largest ownership stake of 74%, while the remaining 26% is owned by CIDCO, the land development authority of the Maharashtra government. This joint venture will combine the efficiency of the private sector with government support, which will contribute to the success of the project.

Why Is Navi Mumbai International Airport Special?

The Navi Mumbai International Airport will be the second in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Up until now, all air traffic in the region has been handled by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. With Mumbai being one of the busiest cities in India, a second airport was a dire need.

The airport has been allocated the code NMI. The significance of this three-letter code is that all flight tickets, baggage labels, and air messages will use it globally.

Large Capacity To Support Future Development

Here is where things become very impressive. When the airport is complete with all its phases, it will have an enormous capacity. The airport can handle 90 million passengers annually. In context, that is an exceptionally large number of people for a single airport.

It will also handle 3.2 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) of cargo annually. This freight capacity will increase trade and commerce, making it easier for businesses to import and export goods.

These figures will make Navi Mumbai International Airport one of the largest aviation hubs in Asia, positioning Mumbai as a major player in the Asian aviation market.

Why Does Mumbai Need A Second Airport?

Capacity at airports has been a persistent issue in Mumbai. The current airport operates at maximum capacity, leaving little room for new flights. The second airport is a solution to multiple problems.

First, it will decongest the existing Mumbai airport. Second, it will enable more airlines to operate additional routes, providing passengers with greater choice and potentially lower fares. Third, it will boost Mumbai’s growing economy by enhancing connectivity for both cargo and passengers.

Once the airport is inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on October 8, preparations for commercial operations will begin. The airport team will run trials, liaise with airlines, and complete all necessary preparations by December 2025.

Airlines will begin announcing their flights from Navi Mumbai Airport. Travelers will soon be able to book flights departing from NMI. Operations will gradually increase with the addition of flights and destinations.

Economic Impact On The Region

The new airport will create thousands of jobs both directly and indirectly. The increased activity will benefit hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and other businesses.

Navi Mumbai, as a region, will experience major development. Improved connectivity tends to attract businesses and investments, which can transform the entire economic landscape of the region.

More than a new airport, this inauguration symbolizes something greater. It demonstrates India’s determination to create world-class infrastructure. With its massive capacity and state-of-the-art facilities, Navi Mumbai International Airport will enable India to meet the ever-growing air traffic demand.
