Mary Goulding, a Tall Ferns basketball player, is in critical but stable condition at Christchurch Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after a car collision in Canterbury on Saturday morning. Tall Ferns shared the news on social media, asking for prayers and kind thoughts for Goulding and her family during this difficult time.

The New Zealand women’s national basketball team is known as the Tall Ferns. They compete for New Zealand in international basketball tournaments such as the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, the FIBA Oceania Championships, and the Olympic Games. The squad is made up of outstanding female basketball players from New Zealand who participate against other national teams. The Tall Ferns have significantly contributed to the sport and received international attention for their exploits.

Mary Goulding, a native of Rangiora, developed an early interest in both netball and basketball. She enthusiastically participated in both sports beginning at age eight and continued until she reached a turning point. After being selected for the New Zealand under-18 basketball team and winning the national under-19 title with Canterbury, Goulding decided to focus her energy and talents on basketball.

Goulding studied in theology and religious studies during her college years to explore her scholarly interests. In addition to her education, she spent four years on the Rams basketball team, where she had a tremendous influence.

In 2019, she was named team captain for the final year of her career. Notably, she thrived on the court, winning the Atlantic-10 conference MVP award and being named to the All-Atlantic first team. Goulding’s achievements demonstrated her leadership talents as well as her remarkable athletic abilities.

Two vehicles crashed at the intersection of Blackett and Durham Streets in Rangiora around 9:05 a.m. According to the police, both drivers were injured, with one in critical condition and the other in moderate condition.
