Imagine speeding through toll booths on Maharashtra’s highways without stopping, no lines, no money, no FASTag deductions, just a smooth and stress-free drive. That scenario is now turning into reality for electric vehicle owners in the state. The Maharashtra government has announced zero toll for electric vehicles and ordered quick refunds for EV users who were incorrectly charged. This move is not just about saving money. It sends a strong message that the state is serious about rewarding people who choose cleaner, future-ready transportation and pushing green mobility forward.

Maharashtra’s electric vehicle owners might finally get the relief they were promised. To further promote greener and cleaner transportation, the state administration has been directed to completely implement toll exemptions for EVs on all major highways within the next eight days.

This order came after several complaints from EV users who reported that toll charges were still being deducted despite the official exemption policy already being in place.

Rahul Narwekar, the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, issued the directive during the ongoing assembly session in Nagpur. Narwekar took a firm stand, declaring that any toll collected from electric vehicles after the implementation of the policy is illegal.

He instructed authorities to immediately stop toll deductions for EVs and ensure that all users who were wrongly charged receive timely refunds.

As per the Speaker’s directions, several key highways across the state will be fully toll-free for electric vehicles. These include the Mumbai–Pune Motorway, Mahamarg Samruddhi, and Atal Setu.

These measures fall under the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy 2025, which aims to boost EV adoption by offering subsidies, tax benefits, and waivers on registration fees.

Technical Issues Behind Wrong Toll Deductions

Officials admitted that the continued charging of EV owners was mainly due to technical problems. Electric vehicles were being incorrectly detected at toll booths because FASTag systems were not properly syncing with the VAHAN vehicle database.

Narwekar stressed that toll operators must update their systems immediately to accurately identify registered EVs and prevent further errors.

Push For More EV Charging Stations

Along with toll exemptions, the Speaker also urged the government to speed up the development of EV charging infrastructure across Maharashtra. He highlighted the importance of increasing the number of charging stations and strengthening infrastructure to reduce range anxiety and make long-distance EV travel easier.

With the number of electric vehicles steadily increasing, better charging access is crucial for sustained adoption.

Refund Process And New Guidelines Ahead

The state government is expected to soon release updated operating guidelines detailing how toll refunds will be processed and how system upgrades will be carried out. Officials confirmed that full compliance will be achieved within the given timeline and that corrective measures are already underway.

Major Relief For EV Owners

This decision is expected to provide immediate financial relief to thousands of EV owners while reinforcing Maharashtra’s commitment to environmentally friendly transport. Toll-free highways, financial incentives, and improved charging infrastructure are likely to accelerate electric vehicle adoption across the state.

Maharashtra’s move to enforce zero toll for electric vehicles is more than just a policy correction. It reflects a clear intent to encourage sustainable mobility and support citizens who are making greener choices. By addressing technical flaws, ensuring refunds, and strengthening EV infrastructure, the state is setting an example for others to follow. For EV owners, this means smoother drives, lower costs, and greater confidence in choosing electric for the long run.
