Imagine receiving government support and then being advised to “Update your details in two months or lose your benefits.” That is exactly the situation that thousands of women in Maharashtra face. The state government has made e-KYC mandatory for all Ladki Bahin scheme beneficiaries, giving them a two-month deadline to finish the process. The change is intended to sift out false entries and guarantee that only genuine women benefit, but it has also created a sense of urgency and fear among recipients.
What Is e-KYC?
On Thursday, the Maharashtra government made e-KYC or Electronic Know Your Customer verification mandatory for Mukhya Mantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme recipients in the state.
The initiative, which goes live in June 2024, would provide a monthly payment of Rs 1,500 to women aged 21 to 65 whose households earn less than Rs 2.5 lakh per year.
KYC, or Know Your Customer, is a regulated process used by financial organizations to verify their customers’ identities before providing access to services such as opening bank accounts, investing, and utilizing digital wallets. Customers must submit documentation such as Aadhaar, PAN card, photograph, and biometric information.
Digital verification will not only ensure that qualified women receive benefits continuously, but it will also help speed up future access to other government schemes.
The GR further stipulates that women must complete their Aadhaar-based identification within two months to continue receiving financial support directly into their bank accounts. Failure to do so will result in benefits being withheld. In addition, the verification will have to be done every year.
