It is said that there is no age for studies and this has been proved by 96-year-old Karthyayani Amma. Not only this, she has decided to study till the 10th class. She is considered to be the oldest student of the state. She resides in Alappuzha district of Kerala.

According to the local media, in January 2018, the literacy crew of Cheppad Gram Panchayat went to Laxmi Vedu Colony, for a literacy drive for the elderly for the elderly. On this occasion, most elderly women living in the colony tried to avoid this literacy mission but Karthyayani Amma came forward to be a part of it.

Amma is currently studying mathematics and is busy in learning tables up to 3. Apart from this, she is also learning the alphabet of Malayalam. In the coming year, Amma will not only start studying class Fourth but with that, she will learn English, which is being included in her course. After this initiative of Amma, 30 elders living in the colony too enrolled in the course.

 

Inspired From Daughter

In addition, Karthyayani Amma was greatly inspired when she saw her daughter Ammini Amma reading. Amma’s daughter passed the Literacy Mission course at the age of 60. This course of literacy mission is equivalent to the class 10th conventional course. Karthyayani Amma’s father was a tutor by profession. But despite that, she and her sister left school when they were 12 years old. Both of them worked in a temple located near the house.
