Indian Railways New Luggage Rules: Avoid Fines, Check Fare Chart And Weight Limits

If you’re not careful, you might have to pay a fine if your luggage weight is more than what your ticket permits. Indian Railways has strict regulations on the amount of luggage that each passenger is permitted to bring, and they are being implemented more strictly.

Passengers have to comply with a number of specifications, including those that concern the safe and efficient transportation of their luggage. Many passengers, however, are not aware that there is a weight restriction on train bags. Where this luggage is checked and what happens if someone goes above the limit are frequently asked questions, so let’s simplify things so you can travel without worry.

Where Do Indian Railways Check Baggage?

All passengers’ luggage is not regularly weighed. Checking, however, may take place close to the parcel office or at large train stations equipped with baggage scanners. Additionally, luggage inspectors and train ticket examiners (TTEs) have the authority to pull over and examine luggage that is unusually heavy or large.

During security checks, security guards may also weigh the bags. TVs, heavy luggage, and cartons are given extra consideration.

Indian Railways Revised Fares And Ticket Booking Guidelines

According to reports, Indian Railways has raised the cost of both AC and non-AC coaches on mail and express trains starting on July 1, 2025.

They have raised the prices based on distance; for example, the general non-air-conditioned sleeper class and first-class costs have gone up by 50 paise per kilometer. Mail and express non-AC train fares have also gone up by one paisa per kilometer.

The fare has gone up by 2 paise per kilometer for the AC class, and the price of first-class mail or express trains, sleeper-class trains, and second-class trains has gone up by one paisa per kilometer.

In the same way, the cost of AC coaches—that is, AC-3, AC-2, and First AC—has gone up by 2 paise per kilometer.

How Much Luggage Is Allowed To Be Brought?

Depending on the class of travel, Indian Railways has imposed various baggage weight limits:

  • Class General: Up to 35 kilograms
  • Sleeper Class: Up to 40 kilograms
  • Third AC: Up to 40 kg
  • Second AC: Up to 50 kg
  • First AC: Up to 70 kg

A passenger must make a reservation in advance and pay an extra charge at the parcel office if they wish to bring more luggage than is allowed.

What Happens If You Bring Extra Luggage?

A fine may be imposed by the TTE or luggage inspector if a passenger is discovered to have unbooked excess baggage. The amount of additional weight being carried and the distance traveled determine this fine.

Passengers are requested to book additional luggage in advance and stick to the permitted travel limits in order to avoid fines and inconvenience.

What Is Not Allowed?

You are limited in what you can carry in addition to the weight. Things like flammable substances are strictly prohibited. Check the notices at your station or go to the official website indianrailways.gov.in for the most comprehensive information. For support, you can also dial 139.
