US Actor Imran Khan Asked To Leave India Days After CJP Protest

Actor Imran Khan, known for films such as Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and I Hate Luv Storys, has been asked to leave India by the Mumbai Police, days after participating in a protest organised by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). According to a report, the police have given the actor a deadline of October 28 to leave the country.

The development follows Khan’s participation in a protest held at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The actor, who holds US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, was among hundreds of people detained during the demonstration.

Why Has Imran Khan Been Asked To Leave India?

According to reports, the Mumbai Police issued a notice asking Khan to leave India by October 28. The action was taken under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, following his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen. “Action has been taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen,” the police said.

Khan is the nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan. Although he is associated with the Indian film industry, he holds US citizenship and an OCI card rather than full Indian citizenship. Section 7 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, empowers the Central Government to issue directions regulating or restricting the entry, departure, presence or movement of foreigners in India. The police notice has been issued under the provisions of this law.

What Happened During The CJP Protest In Mumbai?

The protest took place at August Kranti Maidan on October 10. Demonstrators had gathered to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Khan attended the demonstration alongside his partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayne Marie Khan. The three were detained by the police and later released.

Reportedly, around 400 people were detained during the protest. Those taken into custody included members of the organisation Hum Bharat Ke Log, led by Tushar Gandhi, as well as activists associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

Following his detention, Khan shared a photograph of himself inside a police van. He captioned the picture, “Apparently I’m going for a drive”. In another video, the actor questioned why he and others had been detained. He said they had been picked up from the streets and made to sit in police vans before being driven around for approximately two hours.

Speaking to the media, Khan explained why he had attended the protest.

“I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people’s voices being suppressed? That is why I am here,” the actor said.

BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya Had Raised A Complaint

The police action also follows a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who approached the Mumbai Police over Khan’s participation in the demonstration. Somaiya alleged that the action taken against the actor was incomplete and sought further charges over what he described as an illegal political agitation and a violation of OCI provisions and visa conditions.

In a post on X dated October 11, Somaiya said he had written to and spoken with Gamdevi Police Station regarding the matter. He also announced plans to visit the police station to pursue his complaint. The police notice asking Khan to leave India marks a further development in the case following the protest and the subsequent complaint.

What Happens Next?

The immediate deadline for Khan to leave India is October 28, according to the notice. The development has drawn attention to the rules governing foreign citizens and OCI cardholders participating in political demonstrations in India. For now, the reported notice places the focus on Khan’s immigration status and his participation in the October 10 protest. Further developments will depend on the steps taken by the actor and the authorities.
