Delhi HC Rejects Sameer Wankhede’s Defamation Plea Against Aryan Khan’s Netflix Series, The Ba***ds Of Bollywood

The courtroom drama just got a twist straight out of a Bollywood script! Ex NCB officer Sameer Wankhede’s bid to stop Aryan Khan’s highly anticipated directorial debut, The Ba***ds of Bollywood, has failed, with the Delhi High Court declining to give relief. What was supposed to be a legal knockout turned into a big victory for Shah Rukh Khan’s son, leaving fans, critics, and gossip mills screaming about what will happen next in this high-profile struggle.

The Delhi High Court on Friday questioned the maintainability of the defamation suit filed by former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) zonal director Sameer Wankhede against Red Chillies Entertainment Limited, owned by actor Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, for their series The Ba***ds of Bollywood, and directed him to amend it, justifying why it should be entertained.

The case concerns Aryan Khan‘s directorial debut show, The Ba***ds of Bollywood, which Wankhede alleges contains false, malicious, and defamatory content against him. “This series conveys a misleading and negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies, thereby eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions,” Wankhede’s petition stated.

It also claimed that the show was “deliberately conceptualized and executed with the intent to malign Sameer Wankhede’s reputation in a colorable and prejudicial manner,” especially since legal proceedings involving him and Aryan Khan are ongoing before the Bombay High Court and the NDPS Special Court in Mumbai.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav asked Wankhede’s lawyer how the plea could be regarded as maintainable in Delhi. The court stated, “Your complaint is not maintainable here in Delhi. I am rejecting your complaint. If your argument had been that you had been defamed in several places, including Delhi, with the most damage occurring in Delhi, we would have nonetheless looked into the matter here in Delhi.”

However, senior counsel Sandeep Sethi, who was representing Wankhede, stated that the series has been telecast in major cities, including Delhi, and has tarnished the former NCB officer’s reputation. He clarified, “So far as the web series is meant for Delhi, it is seen by viewers in Delhi, and I am defamed here.”

Wankhede filed a suit seeking Rs 2 crore in damages, which he intended to gift to the Tata Memorial Centre. He said that the online series portrays anti-drug enforcement authorities incorrectly and unfavorably, affecting public faith.

The action also sought a court order prohibiting the show’s streaming and distribution, as well as a declaration that it was defamatory.
