It has been six whole years since Hamid Ansari has seen his home country. It has been six years since he steps foot out of jail for something he did not do. On December 18, 2018, Hamid Ansari returned to India after spending hellish time in a Pakistani jail and he recounts his frightening experience and what circumstances lead him to the same.

When he narrates the incident, he says that he cannot ever forget this dark chapter of his life. “I did not intend to do anything against Pakistan,” he says. He tried to help a girl who claimed that she was being forced by her family to marry and was looking to flee. Hamid Ansari could not leave the situation in cowardice.

He offered to help the girl. He says, “Those who helped me find a way out had placed the net likewise.” Hamid Ansari was arrested in a lodge and it was then he realized that it was going to be too long until he sees his motherland. Hamid was imprisoned in hellish conditions.

He did not know what time of the day it was. Later on, He slowly prayed for release from the 15 feet underground basement where he was locked in. “I was given no proper food and there were no other facilities”, he painfully recounts, “The officers would come and inquire me all week”.

He was in no condition to talk but was forced to. Hamid states that the officers told him that they knew he was innocent but he conveniently trapped himself because he is “Hindustani”. Finally, Hamid Ansari left Pakistan crossing the Attari-Wagah border and saw his house doors open to his mother, father, and brother after 6 years of torture. He says “I have to move on for them… my dreams are calling to me”.
