With Diwali preparations going on all around us, we feel nostalgic thinking about all the crackers we used to burn till last year. The ban in Delhi and other places has reduced the craze for crackers from this year. But, however, we still remember all the little bundles of joy we used to lighten to ensure a prosperous and happy Diwali. Here is a list of 8 such crackers which were, and which will always remain our favorites.

1. Popping Strips

It is commonly known as ‘tikli’ or ‘reel’ in Hindi. They are thin red strips with bubble-like lumps on them. You can either load them in a special gun made to burst these or simply crush them under your feet. It is the safest cracker for children.

2. Rocket

A rocket was considered the riskiest cracker in the 90’s when all these fancy sky-shot crackers were not available in the market. Rockets can often land up to places they shouldn’t. You just fix them in a bottle and ignite them and in a flash, they are up in the sky.

3. Snake Bomb

Generally termed as ‘saap ki goliyan’, these are black round tablets that take the shape of a snake when burnt. They are very pocket-friendly and comparatively risk-free.

4. Phoonk Bomb

It is one of the easiest and safest crackers to play with. Just blow air from your mouth while cupping the cracker in your fist, and then smack it on the floor.

5. Colourful Matches

It was considered as a treat to eyes, as all the matches when lightened, produced colorful flames.

6. Hunter

Hunter was the closest substitute to Sparklers (Phuljhadi), except for the fact that it did not have a safety handle at the end. It continued to burn till its very end which degraded it in terms of safety. However, it was the least noisy and enjoyable cracker.

7. Chakri

via

There were no fancy chakris back then, but simple and small chakris used to be the source of joy and laughter for everyone. Kids used to enjoy its swift circular motion and loved jumping on it.

8. Laxmi Bomb

Laxmi bomb was the noisiest cracker of all. It was a little bundle of hazards packed into a tiny box wrapped with green wire. It is loud enough to make small kids tremble with fear. Laxmi bombs are now rarely available in the market.
