Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving beyond chatbots and becoming part of everyday business operations. IT services major Cognizant is taking another step in this direction by bringing together more than 25,000 professionals to help businesses adopt AI solutions powered by OpenAI.
The company has formed a dedicated OpenAI Frontier Capability Group, which will work with technologies such as ChatGPT and Codex. The initiative aims to help clients integrate AI into software development, customer service and other business operations.
Cognizant is also starting with its own teams. The company plans to expand the use of OpenAI technology across its sales and customer success operations before applying the experience to client projects.
What Will Cognizant’s New OpenAI Group Do?
The new group will initially focus on three major areas: AI-assisted software engineering, application modernisation and agentic customer operations. In software engineering, Cognizant plans to use OpenAI’s Codex to assist developers with writing, testing and releasing code. The technology is expected to support development teams and make different stages of software engineering more efficient.
Application modernisation is another key focus. Businesses often depend on legacy systems that are difficult and expensive to maintain. Cognizant aims to use OpenAI-powered tools to understand older mainframe systems and help generate cloud-native code. The company has clarified that engineers will continue reviewing every consequential decision. The third area involves bringing AI into sales, customer service and support operations. Instead of offering standalone AI tools, Cognizant wants to develop solutions that can operate within existing business processes and handle specific tasks.
Over 21,000 Employees Have Completed OpenAI Training
Building a large AI-focused team also requires employees with the right skills. Cognizant said more than 21,000 employees have earned over 40,000 OpenAI learning badges. The company is also developing specialist roles for engineers and business operators who can work with advanced AI systems. This training is expected to support the deployment of OpenAI technologies across different client requirements.
Interestingly, Cognizant has already started using an OpenAI-powered solution within its own sales and customer success teams. The system helps identify and pursue business opportunities. The company plans to use insights from this internal deployment while developing similar solutions for clients.
Cognizant Shares An AI Success Story
Cognizant has also highlighted an existing project developed with a global biopharmaceutical company. The company created an OpenAI-powered assistant that combines search, content creation, translation and approval capabilities. According to Cognizant, the system has handled more than five million conversations and reduced content-creation time by 60%.
The example highlights how AI can be used for more than answering questions. When integrated into existing workflows, it can help businesses manage repetitive tasks and improve the speed of their operations. However, Cognizant has not disclosed a revenue target, investment amount or the number of clients expected to use the services offered through its new OpenAI group.
Cognizant’s Bigger Push Into AI Services
The formation of the OpenAI Frontier Capability Group gives Cognizant a dedicated structure to expand its AI-related services. Its focus is on helping businesses move beyond experimenting with AI tools and start integrating them into their existing systems.
The initiative also reflects the growing demand for AI-assisted software development, business automation and customer operations. With more than 25,000 professionals brought together for this effort, Cognizant is looking to strengthen its position in the enterprise AI space. The real impact, however, will depend on how quickly businesses adopt these solutions and whether they deliver measurable improvements in productivity, efficiency and operating costs.
