Blue Whales: An Introduction

The blue whale, which can weigh up to 200 tons (roughly 33 elephants’ weight), is the largest animal on Earth. Its heart is comparable to that of a Volkswagen Beetle. The long, slender body of the blue whale can vary in dorsal color from gray to blue, with the underside being a little lighter. Blue whales are regarded as the loudest animals on Earth, even louder than a jet engine. Their calls can be heard at 188 decibels, compared to 140 decibels from a jet, according to the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). They most likely use their low-frequency whistle, which can be heard for hundreds of miles, to draw in other blue whales. The WWF estimates that the animal requires about four tons of krill per day to maintain weight and that its stomach can hold one ton of krill.
